When Angel Kuchinski lost her beloved grandson, Xander—a former wish kid—her world changed forever. In the midst of deep grief, she searched for a way to honor his life, to continue his legacy of joy and hope. That search led her to Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina.

A Conversation That Sparked a Calling
Angel had been a long-time supporter of Make-A-Wish, donating regularly in Xander’s honor. But one day, a simple conversation with a staff member named April shifted everything. They met for breakfast, shared stories, and by the end of the meal, Angel knew she had found her next chapter: becoming a Wish Granter.
Bringing Joy, One Wish at a Time
Her first wish visit was virtual—over Zoom—but the connection was immediate and meaningful. “It was humbling to see how much the wish meant to them,” she recalls. That moment ignited something in her, and more than three years later, she continues to pour her heart into every family she meets. Angel treats each wish as if it were for her own family. Her empathy, attention to detail, and unwavering dedication help shape meaningful, personalized wish experiences. Whether it’s a trip, a gift, or a special moment, she ensures every child feels seen, celebrated, and loved.
The Impact of a Wish—For Everyone Involved
The emotional rewards of volunteering are profound. “It’s not just the joy on the child’s face,” Angel says. “It’s the relief and gratitude you see in their parents. The memories created last far beyond the wish itself.” Angel recalls one moment that still brings tears to her eyes: during a wish visit, a little girl looked up at her and said, “Angel, my wish is to meet you.” That wish, and so many others, continue to inspire her each day.
A Message to Future Volunteers
To those considering becoming a Make-A-Wish volunteer, Angel has this advice: “Only do it if you’re ready to make a real commitment. It’s emotional, but it’s also incredibly fulfilling. The impact you have on these families—it stays with you forever.” Angel’s journey from grief to giving is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the extraordinary difference one person can make.
